On the first weekend of September, Twitter was flooded with footage of a senseless murder on a North Carolina train. Security cameras captured the moment when Decarlos Brown, an ugly black man with numerous police records, suddenly stabbed Iryna Zarutska, a beautiful 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee. The images were released little by little: first, the image of the crime. Then, the image of the cowering girl, with an expression of terror, while the other passengers, also black, remained oblivious. A recording also circulated, with sound, in which Decarlos Brown said, “I got the white girl”—which is strange, since the other recordings of the crime had no audio. Apparently, only the Hindustan Times bothered to report the viral story and debunk it. The right then went into a Twitter frenzy: the judicial system, the media, the world, wants to exterminate white people and deem black people unaccountable. Large accounts, followed by influential people, promoted apartheid and racial war without raising vehement condemnation from the right. (Personally, not only did I not see American right-wingers rejecting racism, but I also saw Spanish-speaking right-wingers campaigning against black people, to my surprise.)
Of course, the U.S. has a thousand problems caused by neoliberal “nonprofits” that want to cut public services spending and invent countless crazy ideas to defund the police and eliminate prisons. JD Vance’s tweet, made during the mass outrage, is almost entirely accurate: “The big lie the Democrats told about violent crime is that it’s ‘systemic’ and therefore no one’s really responsible. If the ‘system’ is to blame then you fund a bunch of nonprofits that don’t do anything besides give jobs to underqualified radicals. The reality is that the gross majority of violent crime is committed by a very small group of people and we should be throwing them in prison.”
Everything he said about the Democrats and nonprofits is correct. However, Vance won’t address an Achilles’ heel of the neoliberal right, especially in the U.S.: public health. It’s all too easy to paint Decarlos Brown as a bad man who needs to be jailed, since the right preaches “law and order.” However, since ancient times, it has been understood that mentally ill people—the madmen—are not responsible for their own actions. According to the New York Post and CNN, one of Decarlos Brown’s arrests is for false reporting to the police: during a routine visit, he reported that he had been given a device that controlled his eating, speech, and walking. The officers dismissed it as a medical issue and didn’t care about the devide. Undeterred, he dialed 911 to report the device and was arrested for false reporting.
In the Post, we read that his own mother had already told the local press that he couldn’t be allowed to roam the streets because he was diagnosed as schizophrenic. On CNN, we learned that he explained to his sister that he stabbed Iryna Zarutska because she was reading his mind.
The man is crazy. What is the U.S.’s plan, as a country, for him? Apparently, to arrest him for being crazy and then release him for being crazy (or for being black, poor, etc.). At most, the Republicans will lock him up longer—although it would take a lot of creativity to keep a schizophrenic who called the police to complain about the device reading his thoughts locked up.
It’s worth noting that some of Brown’s arrests were drug-related. Brown is 34 years old, so he was born in 1991 or late 1990. Brown was born into a world revolutionized by the counterculture, where it’s common to extol drugs as a means of self-discovery or rebelling against the system. The normalization of drugs was a U.S. government project – see MK Ultra.
Drugs promote the emergence of mental illness, and it’s reasonable to raise the possibility that Brown developed schizophrenia because of marijuana use. If it’s up to the Democrats, more and more people will develop mental illness because they value “freedom” and glamorize drugs. As for the Republicans, it’s true that they advocate a war on drugs – but it’s highly questionable whether they have any solution for the countless psychiatric damages already caused by drugs. What to do with so many addicts? Trump has already decided with Brown: the death penalty.
The United States clearly needs to spend public money on mental institutions. Since both Democrats and Republicans are neoliberals, both sides have an interest in turning Iryna Zarutska’s case into an insolvable race war, which is gratis and mobilizes the bases. The Democrats will claim that Decarlos Brown is a victim of society who deserves compassion, and they will be willing to sacrifice countless victims on the altar of the antipsychiatry movement. The current state of affairs was incited by them, and it is impossible to remedy it without violating their woke dogmas. As for the Republicans, they are left to paint what is a psychiatric case as racial violence.
Given that the U.S. leaves its dangerous lunatics on the streets, and given that the U.S. is still a predominantly white country, we can only imagine that there are white schizophrenics who kill white people. Brown’s crime occurred on August 22nd, and only two weeks later it was released on Twitter. It’s hard not to imagine that the case was handpicked because it involves a black man committing a very violent act against a beautiful white woman.
In this story, the U.S. should listen to Decarlos Brown’s mother and create institutions to which people like her would willingly entrust her son’s life: a healthy environment where lunatics receive dignified treatment and do not pose a risk to the lives of innocent people like Iryna Zarutska.
