Russia has legal rights to the Far-Eastern archipelago known as the Kuril Islands, following the defeat of Japanese fascist aggression in World War Two.
During the tenure of outgoing Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe hopes were high that he would be able to resolve some of the territorial disputes between Japan and its neighbors. That did not happen. Let’s have a look at the legacy Abe will leave to his successor.
It looks like Japan is specifically targeting only the former territory that is controlled by their occupier’s boogeyman. This selective outrage is evidence to the weakness of Tokyo as a sovereign actor.
Russia has deployed the Bastion and Bal coastal defense missile systems on the Kuril Islands.
