It’s almost that time of the year again, 15th August, the Feast of the Assumption, when whoever draws the short straw at the Russian Embassy in Tokyo has to accept the letter of protest from the right wing gangsters outside, who are still unhappy about Japan’s unconditional surrender 80 years ago and who are still demanding the return to Japan of the islands north of Sapporo Russia annexed at war’s end.
This kabuki has to be seen ̶ and heard ̶ to be believed. Tens of thousands of right wing Japanese, with the world’s loudest loudspeakers, square off against Japan’s riot police who are, far and away, the world’s toughest police force. When those cops start swinging their kendo sticks, you can be sure that skulls are going to get cracked and blood will flow.
Not that it comes to that as, like protests elsewhere, this is mostly kabuki and of no practical consequence because Japan has long ago accepted her defeat and that she is little more than a cash rich ornament in NATO’s playpen.
The Japanese Empire, not unlike today’s Chinese colossus, was built on the motto of Strong Country, Strong Army and that its Emperor was God Incarnate or some such fable. Although few Japanese believed that Hirohito was a walking, talking living God, most played along with the myth if for no other reason than Japan had a long tradition of lopping the heads off unbelievers.
The bullshit about Hirohito being God played particularly badly in Korea because the Koreans had long been vassals of the Chinese and, so, regarded the imposter in Peking, rather than his counterpart in Tokyo as being God’s anointed. All of that made Japan’s Korean occupation particularly problematic and it is an open sore that Koreans resident in Japan and the government of North Korea continue to scratch to this day.
But bad relations with North Korea, China and Russia are not the only problems Japan faces this Feast of the Assumption. Far more damaging to the soul and fabric of Japan is the transformations American occupation begot and which continue to blight the heart of Japan to this day.
Interested readers should get their hands on John W Dower’s superlative Embracing Defeat: Japan in the wake of World War 11, which shows how the Yanks colonised the Japanese mind, after they nuked and fire bombed their cities in some of the worst war crimes the civilised (LOL) world has ever witnessed. With our historical hindsight, we can say that, valiantly though they fought, Imperial Japan bit off much more than it could chew and its violence, which was extreme even by European colonial standards, was necessary to subdue and control its vast empire.
But, hey, that is all water under the bridge. The Japanese soldiers who did their lemming like banzai charges or the thousands of Japanese women and children who jumped to their deaths in Guam, Saipan, Okinawa and elsewhere before the Yankee marines could pack rape them, were as superfluous to Imperial Japan’s core needs as are the thousands of young Japanese Toyoko kids who are currently prostituting themselves in the Yakuza’s former Shinjuku stronghold.
Although I previously wrote here about how the U.S. Marines raped their way from Hawaii to Okinawa and beyond during the Pacific War, these Toyoko kids and many thousands more like them also deserve an airing and, more to the point, a helping hand.Toyoko kids are boys and girls who dress in unique “landmine style” and who cluster around Shinjuku Toho Building when not prostituting themselves, playing tachinbo as it is called, to the passing commuters and tourists. Videos of those kids and the degrading sugar daddy deals they engage in to survive on the streets can be viewed here, here, here and in countless other videos as well.
And, although details of the university rape clubs which nurture such actions can be found here and we can read about Hikikomori, Japan’s reclusive adolescents who withdraw from social life school, work and all other forms of social interaction, consensus seems to be that Japan’s $25 bn host club industry is responsible for much of the degradation that is the daily grind of the Toyoko kids. Strange as it may seem to us, host clubs are establishments where women, as often as not young prostitutes themselves, pay to be entertained by good looking and personable guys and it is very big business in Japan, and it even has spin offs to cater for teenagers who are too young to legally drink. Although videos of these clubs and their gigolos in action abound on youtube, they are best thought of as giant romance scams where the women are shaken down to a degree that would make Nigerian scammers blush. Faced with outlandish bills, the young women have no means of paying off their debt, except by means of the hairy cheque book. Although this scam has been going on for decades, it and the sea of sleaze it generates has really gone into overdrive since the Covid lockdown
If you want to know what any of that has to do with the Yankee Occupation, it is that, as with the Yankee occupation of the Philippines or, in more recent times, Iraq, it is always a case of out with the old and in with the new way of serving American interests. In the case of post-war Japan, that was done by making Japan serve America’s military and economic needs, resulting in the collateral damage today’s Toyoko kids epitomise. Think of the child prostitutes of post-Khmer Rouge Cambodia with Hello Kitty and a couple of Toyota and Panasonic outlets thrown in and you start getting a one dimensional picture of Nippon’s emasculated powerhouse.
Although Japan’s main economic strengths lie in its highly developed and innovative high-tech industries, particularly in electronics and automobiles, its strong export-oriented economy and global trade integration, its substantial financial assets, its status as a major creditor nation, and its highly skilled and disciplined labour force, we are only talking about those at the heart of Japan Inc and not of the great majority, who are just hanging in by their fingernails. Although Japan remains a major technological innovator, it has largely surrendered the consumer field to Korea, China and other upstarts. Because Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo and OnePlus make the stylish, innovative and advanced consumer gadgets Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Sony, Olympus, Nikon and Canon could easily make, those Godzillas have moved up the value chain into “behind the scenes” technology to stay in the game. Whereas many of the consumer electronics industries Korean and Chinese companies currently dominate are very competitive, highly crowded, easily replicable, very fast moving and low margin, the Japanese companies are now mainly found in less cut throat areas, where there are only a smaller number of highly advanced and specialised companies, and where profit margins are very high. Although that makes sense on economic grounds and, with Trump tariffing Japan left, right and centre, it is hard to see a means of egress for the vast majority, who are excess to Japan’s core economic requirements.
The economic problem for Japan Inc is to stay afloat in those and other key areas while Trump’s tariffs are a huge wrecking ball, causing chaos wherever his beady eyes land. And the mass tourism Japan is currently enduring brings its own horrors, not only in the Australian, Chinese and American ignoramuses who are hell bent on destroying all vestiges of decorum but in the cheap hand to mouth made in America lifestyle it represents as an industry.
When Japan rebuilt after the war, it retained its work discipline and, with the police and the Yakuza criminal fraternity working hand in glove since the 1946 Shibuya incident to keep Communism at bay, maintained social cohesion as well. Those days are as faded as the cherry blossoms of last spring. Shinjuku’s freelancing Toyoko prostitutes indicate that the Yakuza have even surrendered their street rackets and tokuryū, an anonymous and fluid gig economy for crime, has made the Yakuza redundant for gangland hits and the like as well.
This is not to bemoan the demise of the Yakuza but to say that Tokyo’s tachinbo, the tokuyū contract killers and Fr Bill Currie’s university rape clubs are three of very many reasons why Japan needs radical social reform to rid itself of the oshi-katsu para social relationships the host clubs typify.
Oshikatsu (推し活) is the act of actively and enthusiastically supporting someone or something you have a strong devotion towards. The term is a portmanteau of “oshi” (推し), meaning “one you support” or “your favourite,” and “katsu” (活), short for “katsudou” (活動), meaning “activity”. While initially popular among female idol fans, the concept of “oshi” has expanded to include entertainers, actors, singers, idols, voice actors, YouTubers, fictional characters from manga, anime and video games, historical figures, sportspersons, animals, trains, architectural structures, and even Buddhist statues. Oshikatsu devotees spend fortunes attending concerts, live performances, and fan events, purchasing merchandise, limited-edition goods, or collaborations related to their “oshi”, promoting their “oshi” on social media through posts, fan art, or discussions, participating in fan gatherings or online communities centred around shared “oshi” interests and collecting and engaging with content featuring their “oshi”. It is like a giant, nation-wide Ponzi scheme where the oshi takes all.
To see just how off the rails this epidemic is, check out this documentary on middle aged Japanese men spending fortunes on their pre-pubescent school girl pinups. Now check out this accomplished female scammer, who blew all her ill gotten gains on host clubs, effectively selling a fake girlfriend experience to buy a fake boyfriend experience. Now check out Hiyama Saya, a TV weather forecaster, who had to apologise to her starstruck followers for having a boyfriend. The TV company’s stock price nose dived 10% once the shock of Saya having a boyfriend emerged and Saya had to shave her head and publicly apologise on national TV for having a boyfriend ffs!
Let’s leave behind the maid cafes and the middle aged men leering after pre-teens. Let’s forget you can rent an old man as a non-performing date and never mind that you can rent a woman from some of Japan’s ubiquitous vending machines. Skip by Japan’s most popular host, who gets women to work in brothels so they can pay for play with him and try asking yourself what tf is behind all this Japanese madness.
If we peel back Ue O Muite Arukō, sakura, sake, Shinjuku, sumo, Yasukuni and all the rest, we come to a very troubling reality not only about Japan but about our own world as well. Japan is where cultures go to die. At the dawn of time, Buddhism and Chinese writing made their way to the land of the Rising Sun, where the Japanese reverse engineered them. The same happened with the Black Ships, Perry’s pox-ridden bullies and all the Yanks who landed at Yokota or sailed into Yokosuka with MacArthur and bent Japan to their will like it was nothing more than a bonsai tree waiting for those ignoramuses to deform it.
Although the details can be debated, the bird’s eye view is that Japan has been distorted by their American allies (LOL) almost beyond repair. Sure, this Assumption Day, the Japanese must continue to watch the Russians to the north and the Koreans and Chinese to the South but, Christ on a bike, Japan itself is up the creek without a paddle.
The Nobel prize winner Simon Kuznets once said, “There are four types of countries: developed, undeveloped, Japan, and Argentina” and perhaps there are, but Japan must use that to her advantage and stop being Uncle Sam’s doormat not only as regards military matters, but regarding economic and social matters as well.
First off is rice and not only do the Japanese prefer their own over the Frankenstein concoctions Trump wants to hoist on them but they don’t want Thai or Vietnamese rice either. If Japan cannot hold the line on rice, then where can they hold the line? Not in mass tourism, for sure, as that is only an American means of eliding all cultures.
Although shogun MacArthur took false credit for smashing state Shintoism and the god Emperor myth (that few believed in), he must also take the rap for undermining Japan’s patriarchal family system that glued Japan together and replacing it with nothing more than a neon lit brothel, which is post Yankee Cambodia but with the Japanese characters of honne and tatemae, of being the prisoner of public opinion even when it goes against one’s own interests..
The guy who draws the short straw at the Russian Embassy this Assumption Day will accept the letter, bow and return to the embassy’s inner sanctum to have his ear drums checked but outside, a short subway ride from there, Shinjuku’s host clubs will be priming themselves for another night of destroying Japan’s most vulnerable lives. Though I don’t expect the Yakuza to do anything about it, the ordinary Japanese best quickly get their act together on that front or there will be nothing, bar barren memories of sukiyaki, sake and sakura left for Japan and the Japanese to comfort themselves with as the Pax Americana further degrades them into nothingness.
