Germans know a thing or two about destroying the free press and replacing it with a propaganda model, Martin Jay writes.

One day early in August you might have blinked. In that fraction of a second, the EU became a fully blown African dictatorship complete with mail order epaulettes pinned to the shoulders of its German commander-in-chief, president and ruler supreme, Ursula.

On August 8th, the infamous European Media Freedom Act entered into effect across all EU member states. This legislation claims to protect press freedom and the confidentiality of sources, we are told by the propagandists in the European Commission in Brussels. And yet, in reality, it will be a tool for the EU to use at will to strangle any journalists or media organizations who dare to leave the offered narrative, the perceived truth of how Brussels sees events, in preference for feral, unbiased reporting.

And it would appear, at first glance, to have the full support of the Germans who, history has shown us, know a thing or two about destroying the free press and replacing it with a propaganda model.

To mark the entry into application of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), the Vice-President of the European Parliament (German conservative) Sabine Verheyen and the chair of the Committee on Culture and Education Nela Riehl (also German with the ‘Greens’) boldly championed its arrival.

“8 August 2025 marks the entry into application of the EMFA — a landmark for press freedom in the EU. But its true value will be measured in action, not words. Now begins the real work: ensuring every member state implements the EMFA fully and faithfully. Media freedom is not negotiable – it is the backbone of our democracy,” gushed Sabine

“With the Media Freedom Act, Europe has set the benchmark for the protection of press freedom and journalistic work. This is a great achievement. But it is only meaningful if we adhere to it. I am looking with concern at the decline in press freedom in different parts of Europe and call on all member states to implement it dutifully,” added the chair of the Committee on Culture and Education Nela Riehl.

What Riehl is stressing about, is the heart of the matter. In the EU, there is almost 100 percent servility towards the EU project and journalists faithfully follow the lead they are given each day by the European institutions and their press machines. The problem for these EU leaches who control all this, is not in Brussels but in the member states where there is a growing gap between the Brussels narrative offered by the ‘correspondents’ and those who work nationally and are growing increasingly cynical about the project. Something has to be done.

For the EU to present this new charter as protecting press freedom is as believable as Israel telling journalists they can’t enter Gaza as it is too dangerous for them. It’s both laughable and entirely duplicitous on a level that we haven’t seen before, even by the EU’s own dirty standards of lies and half-truths. The new code will be seen as acting to protect media freedoms only for those who don’t look too closely while the real dark work is much more nefarious and will even lead to journalists being arrested, a point that the EU press pack in Brussels doesn’t want to mention when they write up what the EMFA is really about. The small print.

Journalist arrests. Just those two chilling words are enough to make older people think of Germany’s absolute obliteration of all independent reporting in Nazi Germany during the 30s, which we can see in full effect even today in Ukraine under President Zelensky.

“Member States shall not take any of the following measures… detain, sanction, intercept or inspect media service providers”… unless it “is justified on a case-by-case basis by an overriding reason of public interest.”

The new law also contains a number of provisions that call for action against alleged “disinformation.” Ursula von der Leyen, EU Commission President, stated, “A free and independent press is an essential pillar of our democracy.”

But of course those who will decide what the definition of what “disinformation” is, will of course be the same Nazis who are building an EU super state, complete with jackboots, silly walks and a totalitarian ideology which Europe fought so hard to overthrow in 1945.

In addition, “national lists” – some might call them “black lists” are to be created listing the owners and addresses of media outlets, as stipulated in the act which appear to be producing content which the EU fears might threaten its identity and powers.

Despite its pretence to strengthen media freedom, critics argue it may further restrict journalism under the guise of protection. What is interesting is that the EU has looked to poorer countries in Africa and followed their example of how to deal with the press. In many African countries, the elites arrest journalists on the basis of a line in the constitution of their countries which allows the state to arrest journalists if they produce material which may threaten the stability of the state, regardless of whether it may be the truth or not. It’s all about not being allowed to throw stones at the old man barely able to peddle his bicycle along the pavement, fearing one pebble hitting him will down him for good. Game over. Yet the terminology is also very revealing. For the EU federalists who are terrified that the EU project might come off the rails soon, they have secured a victory which they have been dreaming about for years. A legal basis to arrest journalists anywhere in the EU who are critical of the EU project.

“Press freedom” for these fanatics doesn’t have the same meaning as for most people. For them, it means the license to indoctrinate all of the EU’s media outlets and its employees with the EU’s preferred interpretation of its own news in Brussels and its interpretation of events beyond. The word “freedom” really means “authority” to beat into submission any journalists who don’t follow the narrative. And the “decline in press freedom” can be translated as “more journalists doing genuine, old school journalism and not writing up our BS”. Expect arrests. Soon.

New EU rules on press censorship will bring arrests of journalists
