Just as Christians took up arms, so did Alawites. Indeed, I am close to some Alawite fighters who fought alongside the army. These individuals were not fans of Assad and were critical of many of his government’s policies.

This week saw a new twist in what has become a D.C. Christmas tradition. I am not referring to the lighting of the White House Christmas tree but to passage of a “continuing resolution” (CR) funding the government and thus avoiding a Christmastime government shutdown.

Ukraine is not only a neighbour of Russia but its etymological roots are in the Slavic for borderlands as Ukraine remains the borderlands between the might of Russia and whatever empires once lay to Russia’s west.
