Turkey’s new weight in global affairs seems to have emboldened Erdoğan to take drastic authoritarian measures domestically. Earlier this week, Turkish police arrested his main political rival, Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, on charges of corruption and terrorism. Some 100 other people were also arrested in a crackdown on the opposition and government critics.

Istanbul Mayor-Elect Ekrem İmamoğlu said result “marks the end of democratic erosion in Turkey and the resurgence of democracy.”
